Revitalize Your Scalp with Ouai's Detox Shampoo

Product Review: OUAI Detox Shampoo

This will be my fifth year into my natural hair journey, and I'm still learning new things about how to care for my natural hair every day. I've never been a fan of false hair and have always styled my real hair with mostly heat. As a result, I had extreme heat damage 5 years ago. During the height of the natural hair movement, I decided to pay more attention to the integrity of my hair, rather than just the appearance. So I eliminated HEAT and grew out my curls for 2 years.

During the first 2 years, I started using the proper shampoos, deep conditioner, and experimented with stylers until I found a routine. I was determined to stay consistent and succeeded. Things were seemingly okay for a while until I began to realize my hair was having problems absorbing moisture. Come to find out, I have low porosity hair! That made it very difficult to absorb water or even conditioners without heat, aka a blow dryer, steamer, or warm water bath for my deep conditioner.

Although adding these extra miles to my wash day routine was helpful, I found out later that using a hydrating shampoo was actually hurting my hair more than helping it. With some newfound research, I found that while a hydrating shampoo is great because it does not strip your hair, it's also not really cleaning your hair either. Therefore, I had a lot of buildup left in my hair. So I went on a hunt for a good cleansing shampoo.

I found many reviews online on the Ouai Detox shampoo, but not by many women who had my hair type. I figured I would give it a try anyway and loved it. This shampoo is now a staple in my routine! I will say, however, I really think the use of this shampoo highly depends on one's lifestyle. I, for example, am a swimmer and swim 3 to 4 times a week for exercise in a saltwater pool. Thus, I like to wash my hair with this shampoo once a week to get rid of buildup. If you find you're not heavily involved in exercise or don't use too many styling products in your hair, you might want to use this shampoo every 2 weeks or once a month. One of the key ingredients in this product is APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, although this makes for a wonderful cleanse, it can leave your hair feeling stripped.

Personally, I really feel as though I struck gold with this product. It does an impeccable job at cleaning my scalp in one wash. I don't feel the need to double cleanse. The assurance that my scalp/hair has been well cleansed outweighs the off-putting sense of dryness. An easy fix for the dryness is to pair it with your favorite DEEP CONDITIONER.

One downside of this shampoo is its PRICE! This item is sold for $43.50 at Sephora, and I can honestly admit that "I've never spent this much on a shampoo" - in fact, I've never splurged this much on a shampoo/conditioner combo. If this price seems too high for you, consider trying a DIY pre-poo using apple cider vinegar and water. In conclusion, I endorse this shampoo because it delivers on its promises. It provided my hair with the detox it needed, leaving my scalp feeling rejuvenated and refreshed after each wash.
